We’ve all heard the famous saying, “winter is coming,” but what does that mean for riders and horses? In summer, we put our horses into cooling blankets and try to keep conditions comfortable. In winter, we need to do the same, but the way in which we do it differs rather drastically.
Wet horses can get cold: Keeping your horse dry is important for their comfort and well being. Just like you, your horse will get cold in the rain without a rain jacket. You can ensure that your horse is kept warm by investing in a waterproof turnout rug that will help to protect them from the rain and keep them dry. Fleece rugs: Fleece rugs are also worth investing in colder areas as they will keep your horse properly warm. These rugs can also be used while riding, to keep your horse warm. Keeping your horse warm on a cold day’s ride will help keep their muscles warm too, lowering the risk of injury due to cold and stiff muscles.
Dress in layers: Gran was onto something when she told you to dress in layers growing up. Riding, as you probably know, is a rather strenuous exercise. For this reason, dressing in layers is important. Always be sure to bring a rain jacket, and wear cooler clothing underneath so you can take off your jackets and jerseys when you’ve warmed up and are starting to get hot.
Bring a flask: Having a flask of your favourite warm beverage waiting for you at the stables is a lovely way to end off a ride. This way, if you happen to get caught in the rain or don’t bring enough jerseys, you can still warm up effectively when you’re finished riding.
Check the forecast: If you’re not a fan of getting caught in the rain, simply finding a reliable weather app can be very helpful. This way, you can try to schedule your rides around the weather patterns and hopefully avoid getting caught in too much rain.
With a little bit of preparation, there’s no reason for you or your horse to be cold and uncomfortable this winter. Whether you need a new coat, a winter rug from our latest selection or you simply needed some advice on how to prepare, Steel & Style has got you covered.
