The Remarkable Recovery: How ProtechMasta Helped a Horse Heal After a Puffadder Bite

At Steed and Style, we’re always inspired by stories of courage and resilience in the equestrian world. Recently, our client Lesley Higham’s beloved horse Sassy faced a daunting challenge, being bitten by a baby Puffadder on her left back leg. It was a moment of concern for everyone involved, but thanks to expert care and the innovative ProtechMasta wrap, Lesley’s steed is now recovering beautifully.

A Frightening Encounter

Puffadders are venomous snakes known for their potent bite, even as juveniles. When the bite occurred, it led to significant swelling and discomfort for Lesley’s horse. Quick reaction was crucial, and the care team sprang into action, determined to help their equine companion through this ordeal.

Sassy was immediately placed under veterinary care, and she was closely monitored. Two different doses of antibiotics and high doses of cortisone and anti-inflammatories were administered. To everyone’s dismay, after a week, the swelling stopped coming down even though three sets of compression bandages were used for 48 hours at a time. The following Sunday, the tremendous swelling came back. A specialist was consulted because Sassy was totally lame on the leg that was bitten. Over and above the medications, Lesley also applied pressure hosing for 15 minutes four times a day for 2 weeks, massaging Sassy’s leg while watering it down.

Lesley states, “At first there was just swelling like a tree trunk, the whole leg right up to her teats. They had to hose her, massage her, and force walk her for about a week. There was no wound, then a couple of days later, there was a big sack of fluid around her fetlock, and it started oozing. In the beginning, we couldn’t find any marks, just swelling. The vet said if it was a baby Puffadder, we won’t see the small bite. Then it broke into a sore and just kept draining. Now it is a scab and swollen around the fetlock and hock. It won’t go away. I am very stressed about it. The leg is swollen up to and including the thigh and groin.”

Steed and Style owner Gillian McWilliam then contacted Lesley and offered to send her a set of the ProtechMasta leg wraps to assist in getting the swelling down and to get Sassy feeling much more comfortable.
