steed and style boots while riding blog image

Proper riding boots have more uses than just covering your feet.

Equestrians around the world know that there are a few personal accessories that make a big difference in the sport. From protective helmets to gloves, chaps, jodhpurs and boots there is always the question of which is more important. First on that list would always be the riding hat or helmet which is there for protection of the head and saves lives every day. Second on this list would be riding boots. You might be asking why we chose boots for the second spot and it’s because it isn’t only for safety but also for functional applications. At Steed & Style we want to help you choose the correct boots that are comfortable and give you that added safety on horseback.

Safety is most important when choosing any riding gear because of the inherent risk when you are on horseback. Your boots should have an effective non-slip rubber outer sole on the bottom of the boot. This will aid primarily with keeping the foot secure in the stirrups. This is also very important when you’re not on the horse and working in the stable yard or paddock, as it can be slippery underfoot due to grass, water on concrete and mud. Boots also have a prominent raised heel which makes sure your foot does not slip too far forward through the stirrup and you don’t want your ankle stuck in the stirrup when something unexpected happens.

Most riding boots are made from tough leather and rigid materials to protect the ankles and toes. Your ankles need to be stable when riding and this makes sure your foot doesn’t go too far forward either. Boots also protect the toes from a good stepping when your horse decides to step on your toes which can be very painful and damaging to your foot. The thick leather covering also protects the feet from harsh sunlight, keeps them dry during a sudden water hazard and even from scrapes when riding on narrow trails.

Boots also have a functional use that links to the other important leg accessories. They tend to act as attachment point for other garments. Most notably are chaps and gaiters which are worn for grip and protection from knocks. Spurs are also attached directly to your boots when you need them. These accessories all attach directly to a point on the boot or around the raised heel.

Your riding boots are very important on and off the horse. They keep your feet secure in stirrups, keep your ankles safe from injury, as well as keep you from slipping in the yard or getting your foot trodden on.
