Steed & Style looks at three popular horse breeds: Thoroughbred, Arabian and Welsh Pony. Having the right breed of horse matching your preferences, is like finding a companion for life. You will either be saying, “yes, that’s my horse!” or “this looks like the perfect steed to suit my style.”
Your relationship with your horse is special, it’s a partnership. The two of you need to have a relationship of co-operation, trust and consideration. Horses have personalities and traits as unique as our own. Just as we get on better with some people than with other, so the breed of the horse can make a difference too.
If you love going for long rides in nature, you need a horse that is alert and has stamina. Or, if you love speed, a fast and powerful horse might be better for you. There’s even the perfect horse for young beginner riders looking for a gentle, adaptable and trustworthy horse.
The Thoroughbred – beautiful, powerful and spirited.
Thoroughbreds are beautiful. They have refined physique, are strong and athletic which mirrors their speed and powerful physical capabilities. Their most common association is with horseracing, but they perform equally well in jumping, dressage, hunting and trail riding.
Thoroughbreds love their riders but are known for their spirited personalities. This means they need a rider who can handle and complement their power and sass physically, mentally and emotionally.
They’re the friend who is strong and beautiful. They know it, so they have the personality to go with it.
The Arabian – distinct elegance, intelligent and physical endurance.
Arabian horses are the oldest purebred horse in history. The Bedouins bred them for the harsh desert conditions. Their genes provided the foundation for many other modern horse breeds, including Thoroughbreds and Welsh ponies. The Arabian horse ticks all the boxes in terms of looks, physique and personality. Their striking, beautiful looks are more than just a pretty face; they tell us about their physical abilities and character.
Their wide eyes with the bulge between known as the ‘jibbah’ gives them their intelligent look. They were bred like this for greater brainpower. Their flared nostrils improve their oxygen intake. They have one less vertebrae and pair of ribs compared to other breeds, with arched necks and a high tail carriage. This gives them strength and endurance for carrying weight and travelling long distances.
Besides their intelligence, they are willing, alert and sensitive to their surroundings. This makes them quick to learn, eager to please and good-natured. These qualities help form the foundation of a harmonious, intuitive relationship with their rider.
They make an ideal match for children and adults, whether you’re a new or advanced rider. Think of the Arabian horse as your friend who has it all: good looks, comes top of the class and is in the A-team.
The Welsh Pony – hardy, adaptable and fun
The Welsh Pony originated in the hills of Wales in Great Britain. These robust ponies have developed a personality and physique that mirrors the tough, sparse climate they come from.
Although smaller, they are hardy, strong and adaptable. They were bred as workhorses and used extensively in Welsh coalmines. So, the saying ‘dynamite comes in small packages’ is a perfect analogy for their strength and personalities.
You’ll find a sociable and trustworthy companion in a Welsh pony. Their adaptable nature makes them loyal and easy to work with. Like the Arab, they are ideal for beginners and advanced riders, and children and adults alike.
Remember the dynamite analogy we used earlier? Welsh ponies are known to have a mischievous streak, so be prepared for some fun and surprises every now and then.
The Welsh Pony is much like a good friend who is pretty, adaptable, smart and strong. You might take them for granted and until one day you realize this friend is someone you can count on consistently!
Friendships are unique and personal, and it’s the same with your relationship with your horse. Like friendship, it can take time to find a great fit. Once you found that connection, be sure to cherish it. When you do, the results are worth it.
